Research Methodology

This Is Signals conducts narrative research on both embedded and emerging narratives. Our focus is on unearthing insights that create a deeper understanding of the dominant, dormant, and emerging narratives to identify opportunities to uplift progressive values into mainstream consciousness.

Our team combs through news articles, social media content, websites and forums using a combination of small listening and big listening to do narrative analysis. We meticulously dissect content to identify embedded messages, story and character archetypes, underlying ideas, values and beliefs. This method allows us to see what is directly conveyed in addition to what is left to be inferred by the content’s intended audience. Additionally, we analyze the volume of content categories, which we call conversations. We look at keywords inside those conversations to understand their relationship to each other in order to identify patterns and outliers. Over time we get a sense of the movement of a conversation, or set of conversations, across time and in comparison to each other. This allows us to identify narrative baselines which gives us the “shape and color” of how meaning is made in the landscape.

This is what we call monitoring the narrative weather.

The daily briefing and dispatch provide a 50,000 ft. view of the concepts, values, and beliefs that shape common sense. This research can be used to build a more comprehensive understanding of the narrative landscape in which we all communicate and organize to inform campaign, organizing and communications strategy.

Narrative is a process and not a product.

If we are trying to influence common sense, then we have to crack open space so that new meaning can be made to fuel the breakdown of trust in some narratives while establishing confidence and hope in others. We can do this by seeding doubt and seeding vision. This is not a linear process, it is a dance.
